New Tires on the Front or Rear? And Can You Use Different Tires on the Front and Rear Axles?
A situation familiar to anyone who has been driving for more than a few years: two tires are worn out, the other two still have usable tread, and the tire shop does not have four tires of the same model in stock. Or perhaps the budget simply allows for two new tires, not four.
That leads to two questions tire shops hear every October: can you use different tires on the front and rear axles, and where should the new pair go?
The answer to the first question is “yes, under certain conditions.” The answer to the second surprises most drivers.
The rule you must not break: same axle, matching pair
The Serbian Rulebook on the Classification of Motor Vehicles and Trailers and Technical Requirements for Vehicles in Road Traffic requires tires on the same axle to match in terms of:
• manufacturer
• type
• category (summer, winter)
• construction (radial, diagonal, bias-belted)
• load capacity
• dimensions
In other words, the left and right tires on the front axle must form a matching pair. The same applies to the rear axle. A combination such as “one model on the left, another on the right” on the same axle is not permitted, even if the dimensions are identical.
What the regulation does not say — but what is important:
The same-axle rule does not extend to the entire vehicle. All four tires do not have to be identical.
So, can you use different tires on the front and rear axles?
Yes — within certain limits.
The regulations do not prohibit one tire model on the front axle and another on the rear, provided that the dimensions comply with the vehicle manufacturer’s specifications and that each axle is properly matched within itself. On some sports and premium models, this is even the factory setup — the rear tires are wider than the front tires, as specified in the vehicle documentation.
But “allowed” and “recommended” are not the same thing.
Two different tire models mean two different levels of grip, two different water evacuation characteristics and two different responses when cornering. ESP and ABS systems are calibrated on the assumption that the two axles behave in a reasonably comparable way. The greater the difference, the less predictable the vehicle becomes at the limit.
Practical rule
The same tire model on the same axle is mandatory. The same tire model on all four wheels is recommended.
Where should the new pair go: front or rear?
This is where most drivers get it wrong.
The new pair should go on the rear axle — regardless of whether the vehicle is front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.
Michelin states this very clearly: new tires, or the tires with the least wear, should be fitted to the rear axle, regardless of whether the vehicle has front-, rear-, two- or four-wheel drive.
The reason comes down to how a car behaves when it loses grip.
• If the front loses grip, the vehicle continues straight even though the steering wheel is turned. This is understeer. The driver lifts off the accelerator, weight transfers to the front axle, the front tires regain grip, and the situation stabilizes. In this case, the instinctive reaction is usually the correct one.
• If the rear loses grip, the rear of the vehicle starts to slide sideways. This is oversteer. The instinctive reaction — hard braking and sharp steering input — can make the situation worse. The correct response involves counter-steering, and that is not a reflex most drivers have developed.
If grip has to be lost somewhere, it is generally better to lose it at the front.
The same applies to aquaplaning. A worn tire loses contact with the road at a lower speed than a new tire because it cannot evacuate water as effectively. If the worn tires are on the rear axle, the first sign of aquaplaning may be the rear of the vehicle sliding sideways.
“But my car is front-wheel drive”
Instinct says: the front wheels handle drive, braking and steering — so the better tires should go there.
Precisely because the front axle does more work, its tires tend to wear faster. But the rear axle is what helps keep the vehicle stable and pointing in the intended direction. Front-wheel drive does not change the physics of oversteer, and it does not change the recommendation.
Combinations you should avoid
• Summer tires on the front, winter tires on the rear — or vice versa. Different rubber compounds mean different levels of grip between the axles. In winter road conditions, this is also a violation of the regulations — winter equipment requirements call for winter tires on all wheels.
• Radial and diagonal tires on the same vehicle. Their sidewalls behave differently, and mixing the two can alter the vehicle’s handling in corners.
• Load and speed ratings lower than those specified. The vehicle manufacturer’s specification is a requirement, not merely a recommendation.
• Two new tires on the front and two partially worn tires on the rear. This is not necessarily illegal, but it is the exact opposite of what tire manufacturers generally recommend.
4x4 and AWD: differences can cost more here
On four-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive vehicles, differences in tread depth are not just a matter of grip — they can also affect the drivetrain.
Different tread depths mean slightly different effective wheel circumferences, which means a constant difference in rotational speed between the front and rear axles. The system may interpret this as wheel slip: the center coupling or differential remains continuously loaded and can overheat. The consequences are usually not immediate — they may appear after several months, and repairs can be expensive.
Tolerance varies from one manufacturer to another. For some systems, a difference of around 1.5 to 2 mm in tread depth may be cited as a limit, while certain manufacturers require all four tires to be practically identical. The relevant rule is the one stated in your vehicle’s owner’s manual, not a general assumption.
Practical advice
If you drive a 4x4 or AWD vehicle and the remaining tires are already significantly worn, be prepared to replace all four.
Winter requirements: what changes from November 1
In Serbia, between November 1 and April 1, a vehicle must be equipped with winter equipment — but only when snow, ice or black ice is present on the road due to weather conditions. The date alone does not create the obligation; road conditions do.
For passenger cars and light commercial vehicles, winter equipment includes:
• tires intended for winter use (M+S, Snow, Winter or similar markings) on all wheels
• chains or other traction-enhancing devices for at least two driven wheels — these are not required when driving within populated areas
• a minimum tread depth of 4 mm on winter tires when they are being used as mandatory winter equipment
Two winter tires fitted only to the driven axle do not qualify as proper winter equipment.
This is one of the most common misunderstandings of the regulations. When winter conditions are present on the road, there is no valid “two on the front, two on the rear” compromise.
Driving without the required winter equipment in winter conditions is treated as a technical defect. According to the Automobile and Motorcycle Association of Serbia, fines range from RSD 6,000 to 20,000 for individuals, RSD 50,000 to 200,000 for entrepreneurs and RSD 100,000 to 800,000 for legal entities. A police officer may also remove the vehicle from traffic.
Minimum tread depth outside winter conditions
The tread depth must remain above the manufacturer-marked wear limit, indicated by the TWI marker in the tread groove. If there is no TWI indicator, the statutory minimum is 1.6 mm for L-category and M1 vehicles and 2 mm for other vehicles.
One point that is rarely stated clearly: 1.6 mm is the legal minimum, not necessarily a safe operating value. Manufacturers generally recommend replacing tires significantly earlier — a figure of around 3 mm is often cited because below this point, water evacuation performance declines and braking distances on wet roads increase noticeably.
What is checked during the vehicle inspection
• whether tires on the same axle comply with all six matching criteria
• tire dimensions compared with the vehicle manufacturer’s specifications
• tread depth
• damage such as bulges, cracks or visible sidewall damage
• the spare wheel — it must have the same dimensions and load capacity as the other tires, unless it is approved as a temporary spare
Quick checklist before visiting a tire shop
1. Same tire model on the same axle — no exceptions.
2. If you are buying only two tires, fit them to the rear axle.
3. Use the same category of tire — summer or winter — across the entire vehicle.
4. Driving a 4x4 or AWD? Check tread-depth differences and the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations.
5. From November 1 to April 1, when winter road conditions are present — winter tires on all four wheels, with at least 4 mm of tread.
6. Bring your vehicle registration document: the approved tire dimensions and ratings are specified there.
