Is Installing an LPG System Worth It? A Mileage-Based Cost Calculation for 2026

Autogas is a topic in Serbia that is almost exclusively covered by companies that install it. As a result, it is easy to find ten articles online explaining why LPG is great, but almost none explaining when it simply does not make sense.

This article is an attempt to correct that. We took current fuel prices, realistic installation costs and all the legally required expenses that come with the conversion, and calculated how many kilometres you need to drive before the investment actually pays for itself — and in which cases it may never pay off.

The short answer

If you drive a naturally aspirated or MPI petrol engine and cover more than 15,000 kilometres per year, LPG can pay for itself in less than a year and a half.

If you drive a direct-injection engine, cover less than 10,000 km per year or plan to sell your car within the next two years — probably not.

How much does an LPG system actually cost to install?

The price you see on an LPG installer’s website is usually the price of the system including installation. It is not the total cost.

The legally required part of the process — inspection and certification, the certificate issued by the Road Traffic Safety Agency, an extraordinary technical inspection and replacement of the vehicle registration certificate — is paid separately and is often not included in the initial quote.

The difference in price for direct-injection engines is not simply a higher margin — it is an entirely different class of system.

These systems have to communicate with the vehicle’s factory engine control unit and continue injecting a minimum amount of petrol to cool and protect the original injectors, which makes both the hardware and the installation significantly more complex.

Legally required costs after installation

The Agency fee and the Republic administrative fee are fixed and prescribed by law. The cost of the actual inspection and technical examination varies between laboratories, so in practice the total amount is around RSD 16,000.

The real total investment is therefore around RSD 92,000–110,000 for a standard petrol engine with multipoint injection, and from approximately RSD 215,000 for a direct-injection engine.

Before you book the installation

A gas system may only be installed by a workshop registered with the Road Traffic Safety Agency as an authorised provider of this type of vehicle conversion.

If the workshop is not included in the relevant register, the laboratory will not issue a positive inspection report, meaning you could end up with a paid-for LPG system that you cannot legally use.

How much do you actually save per kilometre?

Comparing fuel prices per litre is the most common mistake in calculations like these.

A car running on LPG consumes more fuel than when running on petrol because LPG has a lower energy content per litre. A practical rule of thumb, confirmed by both installers and drivers, is that instead of one litre of petrol, the vehicle will consume approximately 1.2 litres of LPG.

Let us take a car that consumes 8 litres of petrol per 100 kilometres.

Using the maximum retail fuel prices as of 10 August 2026, driving 100 kilometres costs:

Gross saving compared with petrol: approximately RSD 598 for every 100 kilometres driven.

However, the additional costs generated by the LPG system itself must be deducted from this amount.

Gas-system servicing is carried out every 10,000 km and costs around RSD 2,500 — equivalent to RSD 25 per 100 km.

The periodic certificate confirming that the system is technically sound is required every five years and costs around RSD 9,960. At an annual mileage of 15,000 km, that represents another approximately RSD 13 per 100 km.

Net saving: approximately RSD 560 per 100 kilometres driven.

One detail is worth noting: the current cost of driving on LPG and CNG is now almost the same.

Break-even point: when does the investment pay for itself?

With net savings of RSD 560 per 100 kilometres, the payback period depends primarily on how much you drive and what type of engine your vehicle has.

Multipoint injection engine (MPI)

Total investment: approximately RSD 110,000.

Break-even point: approximately 19,600 kilometres.

For the average driver in Serbia, who covers around 15,000 kilometres per year and drives an older petrol car without direct injection, the calculation is straightforward: the investment pays for itself in a little over a year, and everything after that represents savings.

For the same driver with a modern TSI or GDI engine, the situation is significantly different — the payback period is almost three years.

Hidden costs that sellers rarely mention

The calculation above is accurate, but it is incomplete unless several factors that rarely appear in an initial quotation are taken into account.

  • The LPG tank has a service life of ten years. The lifespan of the tank starts from its manufacturing date, not from the date it was installed. Once it expires, the tank must be replaced, which also triggers a new inspection and certification process. If you are buying a used car with LPG already installed, check the production date stamped on the tank first.

  • You lose either luggage space or the spare wheel. A standard toroidal tank is installed in the spare-wheel well, meaning that instead of carrying a spare wheel you will normally rely on a tyre repair kit. A larger cylindrical tank permanently takes up a significant amount of boot space.

  • A car that is still under warranty is a special case. Most manufacturers do not explicitly prohibit aftermarket LPG conversions, but an engine failure that can be linked to the modification will generally not be covered by the vehicle warranty. Ask the authorised representative of the brand for written confirmation — a verbal assurance is worth very little.

  • The effect on resale value works both ways. For some used-car buyers, an LPG system is an advantage; for others, it is a reason to skip the listing entirely. Do not assume that you will recover the installation cost through a higher resale price.

  • Valves on certain engines. LPG burns at higher temperatures and provides less lubrication, which can cause faster wear on some older engines without hardened valve seats. An installer who claims that LPG is completely harmless for every engine is not a good installer.

When LPG does not make sense

There are several situations in which the numbers simply do not work in your favour:

  • You drive less than 10,000 kilometres per year. Even with a cheaper system, the investment takes around two years to pay back, while servicing and periodic inspections consume a meaningful part of the savings.

  • You plan to sell the car within the next two years. You are unlikely to recover the full investment before selling it, and the resale price will not necessarily compensate for it.

  • You drive a diesel. Dual-fuel systems for diesel engines do exist, but they are considerably more expensive and more complex, while the savings are much smaller than often advertised. For a private driver, they almost never make financial sense.

  • The car is still under warranty and the manufacturer or authorised importer is unwilling to provide written confirmation regarding the conversion.

  • The engine is already in poor condition. LPG is unforgiving of worn valves, weak ignition coils or poor spark plugs. If the engine is barely running properly on petrol, switching to gas will only accelerate the problem.

  • You do not have a suitable place to park. Some underground garages and facilities in Serbia restrict the entry of gas-powered vehicles through their own internal rules, although there is no general nationwide legal ban. If you pay for a monthly parking space in an underground garage, check the rules before installing LPG.

The legal side: certification, confirmation and technical inspection

This is the part that causes the most confusion among drivers, mainly because two different documents are commonly referred to by the same informal term — “atest”, or certification.

The Vehicle Inspection Certificate is issued by the Road Traffic Safety Agency after the LPG system has been installed.

It confirms that the vehicle modification has been carried out in accordance with applicable regulations.

One copy must be kept in the vehicle while it is being used in traffic, and the driver is required to present it upon request by an authorised official.

The Certificate of Technical Compliance of LPG Equipment and Components is a different document.

It is issued by an authorised legal entity — a laboratory — and is valid for five years.

After that period, a periodic inspection must be performed and a new certificate issued.

Without a valid certificate, the vehicle is considered technically unroadworthy during the technical inspection, cannot be registered, and the driver risks having the vehicle removed from traffic as well as receiving a fine.

The LPG tank has a lifespan of ten years from the date of manufacture.

If the tank reaches the end of its service life before the five-year certificate expires, the inspection must be carried out earlier.

The complete process following installation is as follows:

1. Inspection by an authorised laboratory approved by the Road Traffic Safety Agency.

2. Extraordinary technical inspection of the vehicle.

3. The inspection report is forwarded to the Agency for verification.

4. The Agency issues the Vehicle Inspection Certificate.

5. With the certificate, the owner applies to the Ministry of the Interior to have the vehicle registration certificate replaced and gas entered as one of the vehicle’s fuels.

What about CNG? Why is it no longer a real competitor?

For years, CNG was by far the cheapest alternative automotive fuel in Serbia.

That changed on 1 January 2026, when an excise duty was introduced on compressed natural gas used as motor fuel.

The price increased to around RSD 160 per kilogram, causing CNG to lose its main competitive advantage.

Today, in terms of cost per kilometre, LPG and CNG are almost equal.

In virtually every other respect, however, LPG has the advantage:

  • Refuelling network. Serbia has around thirty CNG filling stations, mostly located along motorways and industrial routes. LPG is available at most petrol stations throughout the country.

  • Range. An 80-litre cylinder holds around 10 kg of CNG — enough for approximately 135 kilometres. A tank of the same volume filled with LPG holds around 64 litres and provides a range of more than 500 kilometres.

  • Weight and space. A CNG cylinder must be significantly heavier and stronger because it stores gas at a pressure of around 200 bar, meaning that you permanently carry additional weight in the luggage compartment.

  • Periodic inspection. CNG systems are inspected every four years — or every three years for some manufacturers — and the procedure costs around RSD 15,000, compared with five years and around RSD 9,960 for LPG.

  • Cost of components. Regulators, filling connectors and valves are more expensive for CNG, which also makes repairs more expensive.

CNG still makes sense for fleets, buses and commercial vehicles operating on fixed routes close to CNG filling stations.

For a private driver, however, it is difficult to justify at the moment.

It is also worth noting that petrol and diesel prices in Serbia are capped by government regulation, while the price of LPG is not.

The excise duty on LPG in Serbia has already been among the highest in Europe for years, while the introduction of an excise duty on CNG demonstrates that the tax treatment of alternative fuels can change with a single policy decision.

That is a risk that every long-term cost calculation has to acknowledge.

How to choose an LPG installation service

Installing a gas system is one of the few modifications to a vehicle where choosing the wrong workshop does not simply mean poorer performance — it can also create a safety risk and prevent you from obtaining the documentation required to legally use the vehicle.

There are several things you should check:

1. Is the workshop registered with the Road Traffic Safety Agency as an authorised provider of vehicle conversions involving alternative-fuel systems?

2. Does it hold a licence or authorisation from the manufacturer of the LPG system it installs, and does it use original, homologated equipment?

3. Do you receive a written warranty, and for how long? Reputable installers offer warranties ranging from two to ten years on system components.

4. Does the workshop tell you the full price in advance, including certification and paperwork, or do those expenses only appear after the installation has been completed?

5. Do they ask what type of engine your car has before giving you a price? If someone offers a fixed price without first asking whether the engine uses direct injection, look for another installer.

How much does it cost to install an LPG system in 2026?

For a four-cylinder petrol engine with multipoint injection (MPI), a quality sequential LPG system including installation costs between €650 and €800 in dinar equivalent.

For a driver covering 15,000 km per year, that means roughly a year and a half for an MPI engine, and between two and a half and three years for a direct-injection engine.

How long does an LPG tank last, and what happens when it expires?

An LPG tank has a legally prescribed service life of ten years, calculated from the date the tank was manufactured rather than the date it was installed.

Once that period expires, the tank must be replaced with a new one and the vehicle must undergo the inspection procedure again.

When buying a used vehicle with LPG already installed, always check the manufacturing date stamped on the tank.

Does LPG damage the engine?

On engines with hardened valve seats, provided that the LPG system is properly calibrated and regularly serviced every 10,000 km, there is no significant additional wear.

On some older engines without hardened valve seats, LPG can accelerate valve wear because it burns at higher temperatures and provides less lubrication.

A good installer will check the suitability of the specific engine before installation and, where necessary, recommend a valve-protection additive dosing system.

Is LPG worth installing on a direct-injection engine?

Yes, but the payback period is considerably longer.

A system designed for a direct-injection engine costs more than twice as much as a standard system because it has to communicate with the vehicle’s factory ECU and continue injecting a minimum quantity of petrol to protect the original injectors.

The break-even point is around 38,400 kilometres, which means LPG generally makes the most sense for direct-injection vehicles whose owners drive more than 20,000 kilometres per year.
