Cars rarely fail without warning. Long before a warning light appears on the dashboard, they may start squeaking, humming, clicking or knocking. Drivers who recognise those sounds early usually pay for one smaller repair instead of three larger ones.
Most drivers’ first reaction is to try not to hear the sound. They turn up the radio, wait for it to “go away on its own”, or leave it until the next service. The problem is that mechanical faults rarely stop progressing by themselves. A worn component starts putting additional strain on the parts around it, so a repair that is simple today can turn into a chain of replacements a few weeks later.

1. Squeaking when braking
A high-pitched, sharp sound that appears when you press the brake pedal often means the brake pads are nearing the end of their service life. Many brake pads have a small metal wear indicator designed to rub against the brake disc when the friction material becomes thin. In other words, the squeaking is deliberately there to warn you.
Not every squeak is a cause for concern. In the morning, after rain, or when the car has been parked for several days, a thin layer of surface rust can form on the brake discs. The brakes may squeak during the first few stops and then become quiet again. If the sound disappears after a few kilometres, this is usually normal. If it happens every time you brake, it is not.

Another useful clue is a gentle turn on an open road. As the load shifts from one side of the vehicle to the other, the sound from a worn bearing may become louder or quieter.
