Auto mechanic is a respectable profession. Society itself has not noticed it yet.

There is one sentence that generations of children in Serbia have heard from their parents:

"He's going to school so he doesn't end up working in a canal all his life."

The message was clear. If you don't study, you'll become a car mechanic.

And then life took an interesting turn.

Cars have become more technologically complex than ever before in history. Embedded in them are computers, cameras, radars, sensors, electronic control units, autonomous driving systems and millions of lines of software code.

At the same time, the reputation of the auto mechanic profession remained trapped somewhere between greasy overalls and workshops from the last century.

And here we come to a question worth asking:

Have we unfairly underestimated one of the most important occupations of modern society?

A car from 1985 could have been repaired by a good mechanic. A 2026 car needs an expert.

Once the car was a mechanical machine.

Today, the computer is on wheels.

A modern vehicle contains dozens of control units, kilometers of electrical wiring, advanced active safety systems and complex software algorithms.

When the dashboard warning light comes on, the problem can be mechanical, electronic, software, or a combination of all of the above.

This is why today's car mechanic is no longer a man who only changes oil and brakes.

He is:

• diagnostician,

• electrician,

• technician,

• analyst,

• problem solving expert.

In other words, the modern auto mechanic is a lot more like an engineer than most people care to admit.

A good auto mechanic does not change parts. A good auto mechanic finds the cause of the problem.

The easiest part of the job is to replace the component.

It is much more difficult to determine which component actually needs to be replaced.

That's the difference between an average and a top craftsman.

When a car shows a symptom of failure, there can be ten, twenty or fifty possible causes.

It takes knowledge, experience and logical thinking to find the right solution.

This is precisely why top auto mechanics possess the qualities we usually associate with top experts:

• intelligence,

• discipline,

• responsibility,

• ability to analyze,

• desire for continuous learning,

• professional attitude towards clients.

It is not a stereotypical description of a craftsman.

That is the description of a top professional.

The biggest misconception? That auto mechanics do the work of the future that belongs to the past.

Let's look at the facts.

While artificial intelligence is increasingly entering administration, marketing, customer service, finance and numerous office jobs, the need for quality auto mechanics is not diminishing.

On the contrary.

It's growing.

AI can help with diagnosis.

Can analyze data.

It can speed up processes.

But the AI can't lift the vehicle onto the crane.

It cannot replace a component.

Can't do a test drive.

It cannot take responsibility for the safety of the vehicle returning to traffic.

Artificial intelligence will become a tool in the hands of car mechanics.

Not his replacement.

Perhaps that is precisely why the profession of car mechanic is one of the professions that will remain among the most sought after in the decades to come.

Finding a job is not a problem. The problem is finding a good auto mechanic.

Auto repair shops throughout Serbia have been fighting the same battle for years.

There is no shortage of vehicles.

There is no shortage of clients.

There is no lack of work.

People are missing.

Today, quality auto mechanics represent one of the most sought-after profiles in the automotive industry.

An experienced auto mechanic in a specialized service can earn a net income of around 1,500 euros per month without overtime, while specialists in diagnostics, electronics and complex systems often achieve higher levels of earnings.

Of course, such a status is not reached overnight.

It takes years of work, experience and training.

But this is precisely the characteristic of respectable professions.

Services are no longer the workshops of the last century

When many people think of a car repair shop, they imagine a cold area, oil on the floor and a handyman working all day in a dirty wardrobe.

The reality of the best services today looks completely different.

Modern car services use:

• specialized diagnostic devices,

• digital service processes,

• modern tools,

• hydraulic and pneumatic assistance systems,

• organization of work according to the highest standards.

Some services today are more orderly than many offices.

With good work organization, quality equipment and a responsible approach of the employer, a car mechanic can work every day in a professional environment that does not have many points of contact with stereotypes from the past.

Society owes more respect to this profession

Perhaps the biggest paradox of our time is that the reputation of the auto mechanic profession was declining just as it was becoming more and more complex.

Cars have never been more complicated.

The responsibility has never been greater.

Never has more knowledge been needed.

And there have never been fewer young people who want to do this work.

Maybe it's time to change the way we talk about this profession.
